Go download NOW!!!!!!!!!

Lykke Li's newest track "Get Some" is superb. There's some definite rockabilly influence here, and it even feels sort of jazzy too.

Here's the song, plus lyric video. Visit her official page for download links.

Love these damn line drawings so much

Awhile back I posted about Garance Doré, and her amazing line drawings.

Well because I think these are amazing, here's some more.

These are so simple, but they are so damn chic and stylish too.

Btw, I'm pretty sure this is a drawing of Laurel Pantin. Wish I had her numberrrr.

Ohhh and in case you were wondering, Garance looks like this:

Of course she's beautiful.

LeBron, Nike, and advertising

Nike has been making brilliant, artistic, and sometimes controversial ads since I was born.

They continuously put a large amount of originality and production value into all of their spots.

LeBron James' new Nike commercial is no different.

The fallout, from LeBron's "decision" this summer, has not been good, so of course Nike had to come up with something clever to "repair" his image. I guess you could call this apologizing by saying "eff you if you don't like me."

Great ad though. I love how LeBron takes some shots at some of Nike's biggest guns i.e. Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan.

And if you're not familiar with some of Nike's past ads here's a taste.

From the "My better is better than your better." series.

Nike Football's "Fate" ad, directed by David Fincher...yes the dude who just directed The Social Network, and previously Fight Club.

Nike's "Courage" commercial, right before the '08 Olympics. Gives me chills every time.

The Air Jordan XXI commercial. It features a bunch of people, everywhere, imitating all of Jordan's most famous moves, showing just how iconic these moments have become. Seriously, this may be the best TV ad ever.

Also here's a vid of the ad, juxtaposed to the real thing.

There's a whole bunch of reasons whey these are all so brilliant, but the common thread is that they appeal to everybody. Nike is pretty crafty in appealing to the child, the primal instinct, the woman, the man, the competitor in us all. They work so well, because they make the athletes us, and us the athletes.

Helluva way to sell some sneakers right?

"And I wanna show you how ya'll look like beautiful stars tonight!"

"We got ya, we got ya..."

"Hey, hey, hey!"

"Ladies and gentleman. Lla la la ladies and gentlemen"

"And I wanna show you how ya'll look like beautiful stars tonight."

I love the sample that Kanye smashes on in the opening of his SNL performance. I must say the man puts on a show.

Really I love the song as well too. I love how he's sort of calling himself out with the lyrics. Good on you Kanye.

Oh and if you didn't know he made a movie.

Here it is in all of its entirety.

Pretty neato Kanye I must say.

How 'bout some more 1991?

Janet was bbaaddd back in the day!!!

Go watch this show please

I'm always talking about Mad Men on this blog, and I realize that you guys have no idea what I'm really talking about. In light of that, I decided to do something about it. Perhaps I can "sell" you on the show?

Above is a user made trailer for Mad Men that somebody made.

Hopefully, that will make you want to go watch it, and if so here's the link to the first episode.

If you like it, comment, and let me know what you think.

Monday, October 18, 2010

Ohhhhh Don

Tonight was Mad Men's season finale, and it left me really really troubled.

Not like troubled because of my life, but because I want to know where these characters--especially Don Draper--are going to be, in what will presumably be 1966.

I don't want to spoil anything for those who don't watch, but if you want to chat about this we can do so in the comment section.

So much I want to talk about.

Feel good swag

Today was fun. It feels pretty cool to wear a suit all day, and it was nice to be given the honor of Godparent.

It was also cool to catch up with old friends.

Going to a baptism

So on Sunday I'm off to the baptism of Kylee Turner, the daughter of my friend Kaleya Turner.

Despite not having been to Mass in quite some time, I'm actually really excited to be going. Besides the fact that I was given the honor of being a Godparent, one of the reasons I'm so excited to go is that I get to wear a suit.

I'm sure that sounded weird, but as an unemployed 25 year old, it isn't often that I get to wear one. Hell nobody wears them nowadays.

Personally, there might be something wrong with that idea, but to each his own.

The reason I'm writing this though, is that I'm sort of at odds with wearing my "good suit."

I own two suits, one is a sort of charcoal gray, and the other is black. The gray one I bought when the details of fine tailoring were a wash to me. Suffice to say that it doesn't come close to actually "fitting."

The black one, I had every inch of tailored. It fits impeccably, and although its cheap as hell, it certainly doesn't look it.

Anyway, I'm a bit at odds with wearing a black suit to a baptism.

For one, it's in the day, and two, it's a baptism and not a funeral. I feel like gray, or blue, would certainly be more appropriate, because I definitely don't want to look in mourning.

However, I'd rather wear something that fits than something that looks ridiculous, so black it shall be.

If you see me on Sunday, I'm not going to a formal event, nor am I one of the clergymen, and I won't be in mourning.

Soooo $@#!ing funny

Damn this shit is good. Freaking hilarity.

Name that face

1970's Bruce Springsteen, or Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords?

Either way, sharp.

Should this ever happen?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this happens a lot.

I really don't think a man should ever not know enough about the clothes he's wearing to make his own decisions.

This pic was on the wall of my tailor's, and it definitely caught my eye.

I know it's a joke, but too often it's reality. Like, yes, you as a man should be able to dress yourself, and not look like a kid who's borrowing his older brother's suit.

I'm not saying that I don't value a good woman's opinion--quite the contrary--but I am saying that there's no reason for us men to be depending on our wives/girlfriends to be picking out our clothes.

Besides, no offense ladies, but I don't really know any girls who know about all the details regarding menswear in the first place. I mean I don't know that much about women's couture either, so I'm pretty sure we're even.

So guys, it's up to you to take pride in what you wear.

Or you can choose to have your girl dress you, like your mom would when you were six.

Ughhhhhhhh

Just a sick 'fit.

Wow

Rosario Dawson is hot as hell.

Giants FTW!

At the beginning of this year's baseball season I decided this was the year I would finally pick a team.

I mulled over a dozen teams, before coming to the realization that I absolutely could only choose the Giants.

Amazing city, beautiful ball park, great fans, and a lot of young talent.

Of course truthfully, I didn't think they'd win the division and be one game up in the playoffs, but it is pretty damn cool.

Here's to Tim Lincecum's gem tonight. CG, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 14 SO.

And here's a pic I took--while I was working for Lipton Brisk--of a girl in Berkeley, showing how great Giants fans actually are.

Garance Doré

Garance Doré is quite the artist.

Her illustrations are simplistic, but damnnnn they're stylish.

Her blog contains sweet fashion photography for the ladies, as well as cool illustrations like these.

Enjoy.

Oh I forgot, she's also going out with Scott Schuman, the Sartorialist. What a stylish freaking couple right?

If...

I ever wrote a love song I'd want it to be this good.

I think this may be my all time favorite love song.

Writers need to have "experiences" right?

A professional travel writer once told me, "to be a writer you can't be afraid to do things by yourself."

Unfortunately, I'm only okay with doing certain things by myself. Eating, sleeping, walking to the store, shopping, working out, etc... But I usually don't do things like go to the movies alone, or shows, or anything like that.

On Sunday, I decided--and somewhat necessarily--to go solo, and try like hell to sneak into the Arcade Fire show at UC Berkeley's Greek Theater.

Did I get in?

No.

I did however manage to find a nice hill top, with a decent view, and a great ear-shot of the show.

Of course Arcade Fire sounded majestic, and their passion was palpable even to us in the "cheap seats." And though I still do want to "see" Arcade Fire belt out their ravenous voices of musical odysseys, I must say I came away from my solo experience with a smile, and a greater appreciation for my fellow man.

It was refreshing to sit on a dusty hill top, with two-hundred strangers freezing our asses off, but smiling, singing, bobbing our heads, tapping our feet and enjoying each other's company.

And even though we weren't overcome with the fervor that those inside the venue were--when we sensed the end of the show was near--we moved to the edge of the boundary that we could not cross, and anticipated the opening riff of "Wake Up," so that we could let Win know that we were with him in spirit.

Then it came, and we sang.

And together, the masses inside--and us the small mass outside--joined in unison and we all became the children whose bodies have indeed gotten bigger, but with hearts that have been torn up.

So thank you Berkeleyites and strangers. For once, my lightning bolts are glowing, and I can see where I am going.

Not from AF's performance at the Greek. This is from Glastonbury in '07, but it's the best video I've ever seen of them performing this song. Amazing.

Houndstooth swag

The guy in the left of this pic is cool, but check out the brotha with the peak-lapel houndstooth jacket.

That is one sicckkk piece of menswear.

Quote of forever

"Fashion is what you buy, style is self expression and how you live."
-Swagger 360

In yo mothereffing head

This song is guaranteed to get caught in your head, and you WILL NOT be able to get it out.

BARBARA STREISAND!

Srsly good shitzzz!

Androgynous touches

Androgyny was huge in the '80s, but it has definitely made its mark recently as well.

Even if you don't go all into it--like say Elly Jackson from La Roux--many of us add little androgynous touches to outfits.

Guys wearing skinny jeans, shorter shorts, u-neck tees, flamboyant hair, etc...

Girls with oxfords, cropped hair, guys' shirts, blazers, etc...

What do you guys think of this? Down for androgyny or not?

Personally, I think it's sort of fun/funny. I'm down for anything with a sense of humor, and I think those who subscribe to heavy doses of androgyny clearly have a fun side to themselves.

Alexsandra Colombo going all in on androgyny, and doing so quite stylishly. A masculine look that she somehow still manages to make look very feminine. Perhaps its her play on proportion--fitted jacket and tank, combined with baggy trousers. The shoes don't hurt either.

Random girl doing it much more subtle. However, if you look closely, you'll see all the little touches. The jacket, the shorts, the shoes, hell a dude could just as easily be wearing this outfit. Also look at her handbag, it may as well be a briefcase.
