I don't know anything about Aussie designer Kym Ellery's brand Ellery, but this girl is beautiful.

Go buy Ellery, and Australia is FTW!

New camera+new shoes

Got a new camera.

No it's not an SLR, or even the little mini SLR I wanted (the Canon S95) but it's cool.

Because of budget I had to settle on a Canon SD1400, but it's black, it takes high-res photos, and it's smaller than my BlackBerry--which is just crazy.

Anyway, I took this pic of my new burnished kicks with my new camera.

This blog is about get waaaayyyy better.

Crazzzy shoe game

Went to a party this weekend and my friend Mike's girlfriend, Carolyn, was wearing these wild n' out Italian boots.

What a cool/funky contrast they had going on as Mike was rocking the Air Griffey Max 1's, and Carolyn was sporting her boots. Should have took a pic of them together, but anyway here's the boots.

Perfect example of somebody having a style all their own.

Air Jordan III

If you read this blog, then you know that I believe in style over fashion.

Style is personal expression. It's wearing stuff you feel represents you, making things your own, and not just because you think they're "trendy."

Fashion is just stuff you wear, because you think it'll give you status, or make you cool.

I'm really into retro sneakers--specifically NIkes and Jordans--which I know A LOT of people are.

However, I don't wear them because I think they're cool or whatever. I mean yes, they are, but personally they represent my passion for sports and athletics.

Wearing sneakers is sort of my way of conveying to the world that sports make up a big part of my personality.

Anyway, next month perhaps my all-time favorite sneaker is re-releasing--the Air Jordan III.

I own the black/cement pair of these, which I posted about some time ago, but the white ones are pretty dope too.

Even cooler, it's being packaged in a really cool original style retro box.

Here's MJ in 1988--the original release year--winning the Slam Dunk contest, followed by the new version and the cool packaging.

Tom Brady, the best in the business

Last night Tom Brady, and those goddamn New England Patriots, literally, obliterated the New York Jets.

The Jets were supposed to be one of the best teams in the league--and very well still may be--but they weren't even in the game last night. 45-3 is a bloodletting.

You could point to a lot of things that led to such a dramatic outcome, but the biggest difference in the game was a certain number 12.

Perfect fundamentals, a great football mind, and the best combination of arm strength and accuracy in the league, Tom Brady is the best QB of our generation.

Peyton Manning may have more awards and stats, but Brady is unparalleled as a leader and a competitor.

Brady continues to challenge his teammates, both in their preparation and during the games. His leadership is the driving force in what may be a Super Bowl season for NE.

So this picture is relevant for two reasons: 1. It perfectly illustrates how good Brady is fundamentally. The release point, the torque, just all perfect. It shows the amount of work that he puts into the game. 2. The Pats throwbacks are so much better looking that their new unis. Not even close.

Not that it really matters, but I'd like to think that it's no coincidence the best player on the Pats--and probably in the league--is also the best dressed. Brady, literally standing out, amongst his team as they're all dressed in warm ups, and he rocks a great grey suit. He also hits the details: pocket square, tie bar, check shirt, and burnished brown shoes. That's how you look like an MVP.

It's in the details

You know what accentuates your outfit?

Details.

Specifically, the little ones.

Check out these photos below. Neither of these outfits are extraordinary without the little things making them so.

This guy's red belt--perfectly contrasted with his green shirt--really makes his whole look pop. It's nothing fancy, just something extra.

Again nothing spectacular about this young man's look either. Very simplistic, a few classic pieces, but goddamn them boots! Burnished cap toe boots, are you kidding? Amazing!

Who wants to fall in love?

GQ did this feature on photographer Jerry Schatzberg.

Here are some of his pics.

Don't these make you want fall in love with somebody?

I know that sounded girly, but these are just too timeless no?

Since there's no video to this song yet...

Please go buy the new Yeezy album.

Kanye is soo real right now.

Anyway, I posted "Dark Fantasy" a couple of days back, and here's the opening to the Runaway film, which features "Dark Fantasy" as its opening song.

Southern roots and secret cooking abilities

Not necessarily by blood, but I think I'm the only Korean who has roots to the South.

My grandpa was a Texan, and my grandma came over Grapes of Wrath style during the Dust Bowl.

Her great grandpa was CSS Col. John S. Mosby, "The Grey Ghost," who served under J.E.B. Stuart during the Civil War.

How ironic that a South Korean kid is related to a Confederate war hero.

Anyway, I grew up learning to love artery clogging southern style foods such as fried chicken. Normally, I don't eat this kind of stuff. (Okay "normally" means not during the week, when you're out on the weekends it's sort of hard to say no to something that sounds amazing right? )

Well today didn't feel like normally, and I decided to use the cooking skills that nobody knows I have and make homemade, from scratch, fried chicken.

If you're some sort of fried chicken affectionado, and you're lamenting the fact that I used boneless tenderloins instead of whole chicken pieces you can kiss my ass, because I'm poor as hell and this is what was in the freezer--besides it's healthier. Also, cooking is not something that I particularly love to do. Hell I'd probably prefer to just buy a 2 piece meal at KFC or Popeye's to be honest, but that's not really in the budget nowadays so to the stove I went.

The recipe is a secret that I came up with, because apparently this type of cooking inherently runs deep in my adopted country ass roots, but I will say the meal was worth the effort. Yes, it was better than KFC and Popeye's, at least the chicken was, biscuits would've been nice though. But with no biscuit option, I paired it with the poor southern man's side of buttered wheat bread slices, and an Arizona peach iced tea.

It went down well. Very well.

Maybe I'll start cooking more.

And maybe someday I'll divulge to you guys the reasons why I really don't like to cook.

When style and sports meet

Football coaches routinely look ridiculous on the sidelines during games.

Its become the standard to wear logo-infested, high-tech, non-fitting team "apparel" while guiding your team to an 8-8 season.

They're not the only ones either, athletic trainers can also be seen stuntin' in their Dri-fit or Clima-Cool.

While in college, I almost decided to be an athletic trainer, and one of the reasons amongst many, that I'm glad I didn't is I would've had to wear those damn baggy polo shirts and pleated khakis. (Standard dress issue for coaches and athletic trainers unless you have the "head" in front of your job title: khakis, running shoes, and polos. Shit looks bad I know.)

Anyway, a long time ago coaches looked damn sharp on the sidelines.

Lombardi and Landry come to mind. They were known as leaders and innovators, and they looked the part too.

It's not to say that you have to dress swell to be a great leader, but it doesn't hurt too look sharp while winning Super Bowls.

Just makes things that much more iconic.

Paul Brown

Joe Paterno, Penn State's legendary front man for over 30 years.

Paul 'Bear' Bryant and his houndstooth fedora. Roll Tide indeed.

Hank Stram going minimalist with the logos.

"Lombardi, a certain magic still lingers in the very name."-NFL Films

Sid Gillman. Slim bow tie and bold black frames, hell he could pass for a hipster at an art gallery. At least and old one.

Tom Landry, another fedora disciple.

Mike T, the only cool looking coach today. Maybe it's the razor sharp hairline, or the Versace shades.

Common admittedly these guys look so much better than this dude.

Bill Belichick, genius, dry in interviews, and maybe a homeless man turned into a head coach.

On fire

I was at work while the Eagles were playing the Redskins on MNF, and I was bummed as hell, because I knew something crazy was going to happen.

Well Shit!

Something insane did happen, in the form of Michael Vick.

Vick dominated the Redskins, en route to a record breaking performance.

Glad to see he made the most with his second chance.

Congratulations Michael Vick you've earned it.

Highlights here.

This just in: Kobe Bryant is a baddd man!

As a LA Lakers fan, its time for me to say enough MJ nostalgic posts.

Kobe may not ever be as good as MJ, or maybe he will, or maybe he is, but Kobe Bryant is a true master of his craft.

Nobody has worked harder, to be better, than Kobe Bryant is at basketball.

He has every weapon in his arsenal, and there isn't anything he's not great at.

Whether you like him or you don't, you can't deny there aren't many people who are as good at one thing as Kobe Bryant is at basketball.

Sport can be art, and when somebody makes putting a ball in a net looks so pretty it should be recognized.

Let's go to Madrid

For the good scenery.

And how cool is this little fellow?

Ohh, and how can I mention Madrid without mentioning the majestic Real Madrid soccer team, and the mercurial Cristiano Ronaldo.

Obsession

And this is a weird one I know.

Lately, I've been obsessed with club sandwiches.

I have no idea where this craving came from, although if I had to guess it may have come from watching repeated Mad Men episodes that featured diners and club sandwiches. Anyway, that's all I could come up with.

What's really weird, is that it had been like years since I last ordered one, until this past Sunday.

I must say the the taste of the turkey, and the inherent smoky salty flavor of the bacon, are quite the pair.

It's good washed down with water, with Coca-Cola, hell it's even good with a cup of crappy diner coffee.

Here's to the club sandwich!

Iconic

To be quite honest, and it may seem the contrary on this blog, but I really don't like Michael Jordan that much.

My favorite player is Kobe Bryant, and my favorite team is the Lakers.

But there's no denying how iconic some of Jordan's moments are, and goddamn those shoes were/are sooo cool!

Like this pic. Check out the gold chains, the sneakers, the dunk, it's got style popping off the page.

Go download NOW!!!!!!!!!

Lykke Li's newest track "Get Some" is superb. There's some definite rockabilly influence here, and it even feels sort of jazzy too.

Here's the song, plus lyric video. Visit her official page for download links.

Love these damn line drawings so much

Awhile back I posted about Garance Doré, and her amazing line drawings.

Well because I think these are amazing, here's some more.

These are so simple, but they are so damn chic and stylish too.

Btw, I'm pretty sure this is a drawing of Laurel Pantin. Wish I had her numberrrr.

Ohhh and in case you were wondering, Garance looks like this:

Of course she's beautiful.

LeBron, Nike, and advertising

Nike has been making brilliant, artistic, and sometimes controversial ads since I was born.

They continuously put a large amount of originality and production value into all of their spots.

LeBron James' new Nike commercial is no different.

The fallout, from LeBron's "decision" this summer, has not been good, so of course Nike had to come up with something clever to "repair" his image. I guess you could call this apologizing by saying "eff you if you don't like me."

Great ad though. I love how LeBron takes some shots at some of Nike's biggest guns i.e. Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan.

And if you're not familiar with some of Nike's past ads here's a taste.

From the "My better is better than your better." series.

Nike Football's "Fate" ad, directed by David Fincher...yes the dude who just directed The Social Network, and previously Fight Club.

Nike's "Courage" commercial, right before the '08 Olympics. Gives me chills every time.

The Air Jordan XXI commercial. It features a bunch of people, everywhere, imitating all of Jordan's most famous moves, showing just how iconic these moments have become. Seriously, this may be the best TV ad ever.

Also here's a vid of the ad, juxtaposed to the real thing.

There's a whole bunch of reasons whey these are all so brilliant, but the common thread is that they appeal to everybody. Nike is pretty crafty in appealing to the child, the primal instinct, the woman, the man, the competitor in us all. They work so well, because they make the athletes us, and us the athletes.

Helluva way to sell some sneakers right?

"And I wanna show you how ya'll look like beautiful stars tonight!"

"We got ya, we got ya..."

"Hey, hey, hey!"

"Ladies and gentleman. Lla la la ladies and gentlemen"

"And I wanna show you how ya'll look like beautiful stars tonight."

I love the sample that Kanye smashes on in the opening of his SNL performance. I must say the man puts on a show.

Really I love the song as well too. I love how he's sort of calling himself out with the lyrics. Good on you Kanye.

Oh and if you didn't know he made a movie.

Here it is in all of its entirety.

Pretty neato Kanye I must say.

Chic chick swagger

Of course Scott Schuman's woman has all kinds of swaggggg!

Garance Doré showcasing her crazzzy shoe game, and making a sort of rugged outfit look very feminine.

Scott's a lucky man.

How 'bout some more 1991?

Janet was bbaaddd back in the day!!!

I was like six in '91. My only stress was whether or not I could convince my moms to get me Mickey D's after school.

Back in the day

In 1991 this song was popular. (And why shouldn't it be, it kicks ass!)

And Michael Jordan was doing crazy shit like this

Damn, them were the dayzzz!

Go watch this show please

I'm always talking about Mad Men on this blog, and I realize that you guys have no idea what I'm really talking about. In light of that, I decided to do something about it. Perhaps I can "sell" you on the show?

Above is a user made trailer for Mad Men that somebody made.

Hopefully, that will make you want to go watch it, and if so here's the link to the first episode.

If you like it, comment, and let me know what you think.

Monday, October 18, 2010

Ohhhhh Don

Tonight was Mad Men's season finale, and it left me really really troubled.

Not like troubled because of my life, but because I want to know where these characters--especially Don Draper--are going to be, in what will presumably be 1966.

I don't want to spoil anything for those who don't watch, but if you want to chat about this we can do so in the comment section.

So much I want to talk about.

Feel good swag

Today was fun. It feels pretty cool to wear a suit all day, and it was nice to be given the honor of Godparent.

It was also cool to catch up with old friends.

Going to a baptism

So on Sunday I'm off to the baptism of Kylee Turner, the daughter of my friend Kaleya Turner.

Despite not having been to Mass in quite some time, I'm actually really excited to be going. Besides the fact that I was given the honor of being a Godparent, one of the reasons I'm so excited to go is that I get to wear a suit.

I'm sure that sounded weird, but as an unemployed 25 year old, it isn't often that I get to wear one. Hell nobody wears them nowadays.

Personally, there might be something wrong with that idea, but to each his own.

The reason I'm writing this though, is that I'm sort of at odds with wearing my "good suit."

I own two suits, one is a sort of charcoal gray, and the other is black. The gray one I bought when the details of fine tailoring were a wash to me. Suffice to say that it doesn't come close to actually "fitting."

The black one, I had every inch of tailored. It fits impeccably, and although its cheap as hell, it certainly doesn't look it.

Anyway, I'm a bit at odds with wearing a black suit to a baptism.

For one, it's in the day, and two, it's a baptism and not a funeral. I feel like gray, or blue, would certainly be more appropriate, because I definitely don't want to look in mourning.

However, I'd rather wear something that fits than something that looks ridiculous, so black it shall be.

If you see me on Sunday, I'm not going to a formal event, nor am I one of the clergymen, and I won't be in mourning.

Soooo $@#!ing funny

Damn this shit is good. Freaking hilarity.
